The fourth seminar of the "Istanbul Urban Studies" seminar series organized by the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of Istanbul Medeniyet University moderated by Assoc. Prof. Yıldız AKSOY who is the academic member of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning was held online on Thursday, 06th May 2021, with a presentation by Assoc. Prof. Akansel YALÇINKAYA who is currently the academic member of The Department of Tourism Management.
YALÇINKAYA shared his study titled with "Yeşilköy'den Atatürk'e, Hava Meydanından Havalimanına: Bir Havalimanının Tarihi" as a part of seminar series. In his study, YALÇINKAYA discussed the architectural, historical and economical development of Yeşilköy Airport and its transformation to an aviation museum via oral/ written sources and archives.
YALÇINKAYA has explained the contributions of domestic and foreign investments to the establishment of Yeşilköy Airport. In this context he also mentioned the importance of Turkey - USA convergence, Marshall Aid and other financial supports which were the main sources to establish the first airports in Turkey and required equipment. YALÇINKAYA ended his presentation with the story of renaming process of Yeşilköy Airport and the foundation of Atatürk Airport.
The seminar held with the broad participation was followed by a rewarding q/a session. The history of Yeşilköy Airport was also broadly discussed in terms of the effects of neoliberal policies on cities and the project of 3rd Airport.
